Who We Are

GOALS was launched in the mind of our founder, Bonnie Hopperton in 1993, as she volunteered with Project Read at the public library. Soon after, GOALS was organized by her and two others in the community who noticed a need. Non-profit status was filed for, and the first tutoring workshop was held at a local church, with ten attendees! Tutoring began, mostly Adult Basic Education, on the eve of International Literacy Day with a total of twelve tutors at different places in town. More than 20 people contacted GOALS desiring to be tutored! A few months later, English as a Second Language was added to the GOALS program, and in 1995 Family Literacy was added, in which preschool children and their parents met together for the “Read to Me” program.

What We Do

We prepare students to earn a GED, and teach English to those whose primary language is different (ESL). Our society is dependent upon informed citizens, and the ability to read is necessary to be informed, so we think there is a vital need to reach those who are undereducated, and help them live a better life through our program. We provide all materials for free.
