Who We Are

Shangri La is a 250+ acre oasis in Orange, Texas, along the waterways of Adams Bayou that combines botanical gardens and an education nature center in a unique way.  Imagine a place where you can escape the routine and stroll along garden paths surrounded by fragrant flowers, bird watch for hours, and spend time with friends and family.

Shangri La is a program of the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation, a private operating foundation that aims to encourage and assist education and to improve and enrich the quality of life in Southeast Texas by providing significant resources for the study and enjoyment of art, history, nature and culture.

What We Do

At Shangri La Gardens, volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission – continuing the legacy of H.J. Lutcher Stark, whose vision for environmental stewardship and natural beauty lives on in every bloom, pathway and program. Our volunteers play a vital role in supporting and expanding the impact of our educational programs, visitor experiences and garden operations.

Whether you’re guiding guests through the gardens, helping children and families connect with nature as a program assistant or maintaining the vibrant spaces that inspire awe and discovery, your time and talents help keep Shangri La Gardens thriving.

No matter your interests or availability, there’s a meaningful role for you at Shangri La. Join our volunteer community and help grow the future – one guest, one plant, one discovery at a time.
